Sashiko
Japanese stitching used in the past to patch work clothing. The stitch is similar to the hand running stitch used currently. I use perle cotton (heavier than sewing thread) and several threads of silk, cotton or rayon floss.
Stamping
I use chunky home decorator stamps and textile paints.
Twisted and Stitched
I twist wet taffeta into a long string of fabric and tie it in several loose knots. It is then put into a knee-high stocking and dried in the dryer for several hours and then put in a warm, dry area for several days. The fabric is then unrolled and pressed onto iron-on interfacing. Then I stitch with coordinating and contrasting stitches on the sewing machine.
Beaded Embellishments
I use a lot of medium-size seed beads for embellishment. They give the item sparkle without overpowering it.
Machine Appliqué
One of my favorite techniques. I secure the design to the fabric with "Wonder Under" and satin stitch around the design. I then thread paint the details.
Raw Edge Appliqué
Similar to machine appliqué, but the edges are not finished. I use this technique in miniature quilts and on wearables. It works well when I don't want the appliqué to be well defined and wish it to blend with other fabrics.
Machine Needlelace
Creating your own lace can be time consuming, but rewarding. I use Romano, a heavier version of solvy (dissolvable stabilizer). I draw the design on the stabilizer and use free-motion stitching by dropping the feed dogs on my sewing machine. The stitching can take several hours or several weeks depending on the size of the design.
Crazy Quilt Decorations by Machine
Most of the new sewing machines come with multiple decorative stitches that are seldom used. Crazy quilt techniques offer an opportunity to use beautiful threads and these stitches.
Fabric Collage
Similar to paper collage. It is raw edge-stitched and embellished with thread, beads and charms.
Spontaneous Piecing
I cut fabric in random shapes and appliqué with a satin stitch or leave the edges raw.
