The late Ethel Neustadter's handbuilt ceramics are earthy and sculptural. Neustadter added textural dimension to her pieces by pressing objects collected over the years into the clay such as ancient pottery shards, Korean roof tiles, Egyptian heiroglypics and objects from nature. Some pieces were left unglazed for a natural, almost ancient look while others are more refined with subtle nuances in their coloring. She exhibited in group, individual and juried shows in Washington, DC and Maryland and won awards for her work. After a 30-year career as a teacher and an administrator in special education programs in the Washington, DC Public School System, she enjoyed a second career in ceramic art and printmaking.
