Jennifer Nersesian Tavookjian's ceramic pieces are individually made using slab construction, colorfully underglazed with a playful approach to surface decoration and finished with a clear food-safe glaze. "My beginnings with this medium started with my background in screenprinting. I began the unconventional process of airbrushing and screenprinting onto manufactured tiles. I was quite content with this process until my husband urged me to try my hand at working with clay, in this way I could create my own signature pieces, rather than being confined to a square tile. So, with much resistance, I began this new adventure. I initially began making slab clocks and mirrors, this then evolved into experimenting with building objects. It's been a self-taught process filled with both frustrations and successes. I enjoy each step of the process from sketching the idea to building the piece to my true love of working in the exciting world of color to give my pieces their final pop!"
