Todd Leback builds contemporary furniture primarily using a mixture of solid woods and veneers. He feels working with veneers opens up a whole world of possibilities and that in addition, it is an environmentally friendly complement to working with solid woods, especially endangered or exotic species. He builds much of his furniture around a torsion box - a semi-hollow grid that is a method of construction similar to that used to build airplane wings. Torsion boxes are lightweight, extremely rigid, and can be used to present an illusion of thickness.
"I build my pieces to be visually pleasing with clean lines and geometric shapes. I let the grain of the wood I am using serve as a focal point for each piece, often designing around the wood I have."
